It’s that time of year again! Mustache season is upon us, and thousands, literally hundreds of thousands, of men across the country and around the world are bringing back the mo to help awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. It’s a great cause and a ton of fun, so here’s what you need to know:
How It Works
Once registered at www.movember.com, men start Movember 1st clean shaven. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, groom, trim and otherwise cultivate luscious lip sweaters. Please note: There is to be no joining of the mustache to your sideburns. (That is considered a beard). Also, there is to be no joining of the handlebars to your chin. (That is a goatee.) Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. In addition to spreading the word, these valiant men raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their mustache-growing efforts. At the end of the month, their gallantry is celebrated at private Movember party’s and Movember Gala Partés held around the world.

Where The Funds Go
In 2011, the Movember campaign raised $126.3 million USD globally, an increase of $43.3 million USD over the prior year. The funds were raised by 854,288 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas; located across the globe. In each country, Movember partners with world class men’s health partners who share Movember’s vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.
Of the funds raised in the US, 82.3% has been committed to programs supporting prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. 67.2% was donated to Movember’s men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONGFoundation, and 15.1% has been committed to programs run by the Movember Foundation, including their Global Action Plan and awareness and education program.
